Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of influencing the way your website ranks in the unpaid listings of the search engines. I suppose if you wanted to get even simpler you would simply say “SEO is how we help Google find your site for what your customers are looking for.”

SEO For All Business Sites

The majority of people are looking for information, products and services online. The online market provides an opportunity for small businesses to compete with the big guys. It’s the premier market for advertising your small business, and it doesn’t always matter how much money you have to spend. You can still get targeted customers to your website through SEO. So think of it as online foot traffic.

SEO Focus Points

I typically take the Google optimization route and help clients design with the users in mind. The users want almost the exact same things as the search engines so it is an easy win-win. This typically includes, navigation structure, types of and amounts of content, URL structure and the overall site layout. If you can master those areas, it’ll be much easier to achieve your online goals for both users and search engines.

Responding to Online & Social Media Marketing Hesitant

I’ve found the easiest way to make believers out of people like that are through case studies. The first thing I usually do is give them an idea of just how many people are looking for their product/service. Usually people say “I don’t think anyone is looking for what I sell online.” This can easily be resolved through metrics provided by the Google Adwords Tools and other keyword research tools. Social Media can often be the most difficult, and I think that’s a good thing. I don’t necessarily believe social media is right for every business. It takes too many resources in order to succeed in the social realm and if you aren’t going to be able to do it right, I tend to believe you shouldn’t be doing it at all. There are of course some exceptions. But to sum up, it typically all comes back to the numbers. We have past clients that we can point to that demonstrate how social media has effected their business, and with the right initial research it is easy to come up with an estimate as to whether or not there is a social market for your business. The important thing is to not jump right in, but to listen and study your audience so you learn where and how to engage with them. </rant>

Who is Taylor Pratt Offline?

Let’s see, I’m a husband who married my high school sweetheart and a proud owner of a one year old golden retriever named Bailey. I work out of my house in Round Rock, TX which is just north of Austin. I’m very passionate about the online marketing realm, because I see so much opportunity to not only make money but to have fun online. I really consider SEO to be both my job and my hobby. But when I’m not geeking out, I’m a passionate hockey fan (Go Pens!) and Steelers fan. I also love country and rock ‘n roll music.

BEST Content Management Tool

I think it comes down to your personal preference, but for me it is WordPress hands down. I love how easy it is to customize… everything. I don’t use WordPress for just blogs either, I like to make just about any website out of WordPress. My theme of choice is Thesis because of the endless opportunities you have to make the site look the way you want.

Working with Andy Beal

Andy is extremely motivating. I learned so much from him when I blogged over at Marketing Pilgrim. The way he helps you come up with topics to write about and how well he has everything organized is very inspiring. Not to mention he is one of the nicest guys in the world. I just wish I had more time to get back to writing for him!

Excitement of SEO

What I’ve always loved about SEO is the countless opportunities you have to learn about other industries. It’s one of my favorite things about the little client work I still do. I’ve learned about everything from robotic sewer inspection to the ins and outs of dedicated server hosting. I guess I’m a book worm, because I just love researching each industry and trying to become a mini-expert in their discipline so I can figure out the best way to optimize their site.

Two Favorite Websites:

Outside of Raven’s toolset (which I use 24/7), I find these two sites I am the most active on:
  • Twitter – this has been the best way for me to meet new professionals in the industry, to keep existing relationships in tact and to stay up to date on the latest developments/news/tips/tricks in the Internet marketing world
  • Lifehacker – I think Lifehacker is my favorite blog, and thus it is vital to me. Lifehacker really lets me express my inner geek and is a nice break from the work day to keep me sane

Two Most Inspiring Tweeters

The first one that comes to mind is Casey Yandle (@cyandle). Casey does everything I’d like to do with my Twitter account: he’s super friendly, interacts with everyone and on a consistent basis answers peoples questions and posts great resources.

I’d say the second one is Lisa Barone (@lisabarone). Lisa has done an amazing job at establishing her personal and professional brand and I am always inspired by her wit, writing style and opinions.

I hope to one day harness the awesomeness of both Casey and Lisa on Twitter.

Career Vision

The only thing I see in my vision at the moment is Raven. I was just hired by them in January as the Product Marketing Manager and my job is to continue their pursuit of excellence and bring awareness of the toolset to Internet marketers everywhere. I’ve been wanting to work with Raven for a long time, so I couldn’t be happier in the position I am in now. I plan on sticking with Raven for the long haul. Or until they get sick of me.

Staying Inspired

It’s a combination of my faith and my perfectionism. My faith is something that keeps me motivated each day, and something I am most proud of and most important to me. It’s something that is part of my daily life and something that I make my decisions around. I consider myself a perfectionist because I have high expectations for myself and for anything I work on. I was raised to always do something you’re proud of, and that is something I strive to do with everything I work on. Whether it be a press release or working on how to improve Raven, I’m putting my all into it.
